What is happening:
The framerate decreases, sometimes significantly when the HUD is enabled depending on your computer's specs. I've tested this on my main desktop PC and a laptop PC. On the laptop, there's a small difference in the framerate on outdoor maps, but it is enough to make the difference between a playable game and an unplayable game, with playable being an average of 30 fps or greater on a demanding outdoor map with no major framerate drops or stuttering. However, on the desktop, there is a larger increase in the framerate. While this doesn't affect playability, it still makes achieving a smooth 60 fps all the time impossible for slightly older gaming PC setups with the HUD enabled.
I made sure to do the test as both my main character, and a new character to see if the friend's list has anything to do with it. The difference in framerate was noticeable and about the same on both, but on the new character I made, I saw about a 2-5 fps increase, which is really only relevant with systems with integrated graphics, especially older ones.
Here's the specs for both computers I tested this on.
Desktop PC specs:
Intel Core i5 4430
12 GB DDR3-1600 RAM in single-channel configuration
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB SC
Laptop PC specs:
Intel Core i3 2350M
4 GB DDR3-1333 RAM in single-channel configuration
Intel HD Graphics 3000
What should be happening:
The framerate with the HUD on should be very similar to the framerate with it off.
Steps to reproduce the issue:
- Log into the game as an existing (or new) character.
- MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure you're using a framerate counter such as FRAPS or Bandicam (to name a couple) and that it is visible.
- Look at the framerate with the HUD on, and then press F1 to hide the HUD to see the framerate increase. This will vary depending on the map and your computer's specs.
- Be sure to do this on many outdoor maps of varying sizes and at least one indoor map.
- If you have more than one computer capable of running LoE in any way, shape, or form, do steps 1-4 on each computer.
