Decrease in framerate with the HUD enabled
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

What is happening:
The framerate decreases, sometimes significantly when the HUD is enabled depending on your computer's specs. I've tested this on my main desktop PC and a laptop PC. On the laptop, there's a small difference in the framerate on outdoor maps, but it is enough to make the difference between a playable game and an unplayable game, with playable being an average of 30 fps or greater on a demanding outdoor map with no major framerate drops or stuttering. However, on the desktop, there is a larger increase in the framerate. While this doesn't affect playability, it still makes achieving a smooth 60 fps all the time impossible for slightly older gaming PC setups with the HUD enabled.

I made sure to do the test as both my main character, and a new character to see if the friend's list has anything to do with it. The difference in framerate was noticeable and about the same on both, but on the new character I made, I saw about a 2-5 fps increase, which is really only relevant with systems with integrated graphics, especially older ones.

Here's the specs for both computers I tested this on.

Desktop PC specs:
Intel Core i5 4430
12 GB DDR3-1600 RAM in single-channel configuration
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB SC

Laptop PC specs:
Intel Core i3 2350M
4 GB DDR3-1333 RAM in single-channel configuration
Intel HD Graphics 3000

What should be happening:
The framerate with the HUD on should be very similar to the framerate with it off.

Steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Log into the game as an existing (or new) character.
  2. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure you're using a framerate counter such as FRAPS or Bandicam (to name a couple) and that it is visible.
  3. Look at the framerate with the HUD on, and then press F1 to hide the HUD to see the framerate increase. This will vary depending on the map and your computer's specs.
  4. Be sure to do this on many outdoor maps of varying sizes and at least one indoor map.
  5. If you have more than one computer capable of running LoE in any way, shape, or form, do steps 1-4 on each computer.

From the latest client built, the School of Gifted Unicorns has the biggest framerate difference I've seen, with an average of about 55 fps with the HUD on and about 110 with the HUD off. And on laptops with weaker graphics such as my laptop with Intel HD Graphics 3000, low to mid-30's is doable at 720p, but framerates of 80-110 fps with the HUD off.

And the Bramble Woods has framerates in the mid-40's on a more powerful system with the HUD on and anywhere from 60-150 fps with the HUD off.

I can confirm the framerate issues. Heartlands is a good example. on LAR v0.1.6 I used to get around 50-55 fps on heartlands with hud on, and now I get 27-30fps there. With hud off heartlands now give me 30-35fps.

My specs are:

Core i5 3330 3ghz Quad Core
4GB Ram
2GB Radeon R7 240 HD graphic card.

Another player named Raincloud on was getting 50-55fps on heartlands and he has an intel i7 7700k Quad core, OC'd to 4.5 ghz from 4.2 and a GTX 1070 card, and uses a gamer monitor 144hz.

We can all agree that the GTX 1070 can move quite heavy games, so Heartlands shouldn't give him that low framerate, also add the overclocked cpu, so there you have the biggest proof of framerate issues on the game.

And this was still on the LAR (v0.1.7 and OAR v0.1.8 still on LAR mode), without the amount of people playing now and with just 2 servers that didn't even have different channels to move in on each area. You know those tiny numbers above the chat like 716ce38 for saying an example.

On the new 2018.08.01 build, the difference with the HUD on versus it off has increased, with a reduction in the framerate versus older clients with the HUD on. On a system with an i3-7100U and using its built-in HD 620 graphics, you get about the same results with shadows disabled as you would with shadows enabled on older clients.

You mean we got back to have framerate issues? o.o

Always been an issue as far as I know. Hiding the HUD always gave me a significant boost in FPS. Just this build has the issue worse than older ones did. And as far as the hotbar goes, the framerate drops by about 5 fps if you select a skill, and if you use it, the framerate won't recover until after the cooldown has finished, even if the skill's effect has yet to stop (Candy Shower and Cyclone).

And as before on 2018.03.02, the framerate can vary depending on how many friends you have added. Haven't fully tested this quite yet.

On recent builds, like 2019.02.02 and 2019.02.03, hiding the HUD gets you at least double the framerate on more CPU-demanding maps. On less demanding maps, the framerate increase with the HUD hidden can be 3x to 5x the framerate with the HUD visible. CPU usage increases and often the GPU sees a major increase in usage with the HUD hidden.

In general, with late 2019 builds of the game, you should expect only about 50-60% of the performance of late 2017 builds under normal circumstances.
